Melbourne's Docklands Tramway

The literature handed out at the City Link Bolte Bridge open day stated the
following about the Docklands extension to the Melbourne tram network:-

"Getting to the Melbourne Docklands is easy. The first stage of trunk
infrastructure includes $16 million worth of new tram works built at no cost
to the Victorian Taxpayer.

The trams will loop down La Trobe Street, past the Stadium along Docklands
Esplanade (Footscray Rd) and back to the City along Flinders Street.

The La Trobe Street tram will operate in time for the opening of the AFL
Millennium season, with the completion of the loop back into the city by
mid - 2000."

Have works started for the tramway extension yet? The next footy season will
begin about the end of February, can it be done in time?

Will the operation of the line be subsidised by the Dockland's Authority, or
will the taxpayer be paying the bill?

Will Yarra Trams want to operate a line that will only generate traffic
initially on weekends?
