Remember that there was to be an "HPT" (anybody remember what that stands
for?) to supplement the XPT. The silver sleeper stock (e.g.services to
Brisbane, Murwillumbah, and the Southern Aurora) was to be fitted with
through MU cables and a 3000hp loco of similar axle load to the XPT was to
be put on each end. Comeng and Goninan made bids, but after a change of
government the project was cancelled.
When AN wanted light but powerful and fast locomotives, the Goninan bid
for the HPT was recycled as the EL.
