Likewise, when I moved to Canberra in 1985 ,the friday night XPT to Canberra 
was chockers as far as Goulburn ,and up to 80% from Goulburn on.
The Sunday afternoon / night (cant quite remember) was also pretty full.
Saturday morning early from Canberra was also hard to get on .
