Actually I think there might be a case for both stopping patterns. The day
train does have a suitable sweeper in both directions (Sundays excluded,
but that can be fixed). Speed and express running is an advantage on a day
train, so running express Melbourne to Albury would not be a problem. As
for the stops between Albury and Wagga, keep them as conditional stops
until such time as a Riverina Xplorer (one of my pet hobby horses) is
introduced.

For the night train, there is no real need for lots of express running
otherwise your 6.45 arrival in Sydney gets in even earlier. There is no
useful alternative train or a sweeper. The overnight XPT can stop at
Benalla and Wangaratta, and anywhere else that might get some revenue.
