To the best of my knowledge, the speed record for 1067mm or 3'6" was set on the
South African Railways in December 1978.  It was a class 6E electric loco with a
bullet nose and modified gear ratio hauling one coach.
The record was set between Midway and Westonaria near Johannesburg and over 3 km
(2 miles) averaged 245 km/h (152 mph)
