Metcard blitz at Parliament station

Big blitz at Parliament station this morning (10 July 1998). Weekly and
monthly ticket holders were being challenged for not validating their
Metcards BEFORE they entered the originating station! This caused severe
congestion at the barriers. Lots of disgruntleds commuters. Big job for the
hapless Metcard staff at the barrier! However, the Metcard staff do not help
the situation by talking among themselves and taking "smokos" outside the
entrance! Surely the "smokos" could be taken discreetly, away from the
public! And the Met (or is it Bayside?) seem powerless to control the young
skateboards who've taken up their position at the Macarthur Street
entrance...inhibiting the progress of the regular commuters...and causing
danger to all concerned!
