The turbo charged EMD's were, to use a phrase, "highly
strung", even EMD themselves had big troubles when they
first introduced them. The turbocharged two stroke did
not take kindly to long periods of idling which is
exactly what used to happen on most railways.
The servicing of these units was more exacting if
realiability was to be maintained.

Any doubts about the success of the EMD turbo's can
easily be dismissed by the fact that _5,700_ SD40 and
SD40-2 units were built, in fact more SD40's were built
than the entire GE U boat series.! This does not
include all the other EMD's with turbo motors for US
domestic and overseas units.

One thing can not be denied, the turbo two stroke can
never be made fuel efficient when compared to the four
strokes, this is why EMD are moving to four stroke.
