Yes it makes sense for 2 reasons:

1) You may want to pre-purchase your ticket (e.g. buy tomorrow's ticket the
night before to beat the queues in the morning)

2) You are "wasting" time off your 2-hour ticket if it is validated as soon
as you buy it. The way it is, you can buy it, and then validate it as the
train is arriving. If it is a Sunday, this could give you an extra 40
minutes of travel time.
