I have - and I have also been to Adelaide and Perth in the last few weeks.
Sydneys machine accept notes. Melbournes machines accept notes and EFTPOS.
Adelaide and Perth do neither. Sydney and Melbourne have some degree of
revenue protection in the form of barrier gates (when the staff can be
bothered to make them work) - Adelaide and Perth have neither.

As a regular visitor to Melbourne, and one who, when there uses the public
transport system like a local (in to work in the morning, out for a drink
after work, then back home at night - and this for a continuous fortnight at
a time) I don't know why the Melbourne people are still whingeing.
