Some of the early loco transfers were done on road trailers on the normal
vehicular ferry operating at the time but a lot of the later ones were done
on conventional cargo ships from Gladstone largely because it was the only
port in Qld that had rail tracks running onto a wharf. The last transfers
from Qld were done on a Tranzrail ferry that was drydocked at Cairncross in
Brisbane for routine work. The locos were lifted from a road trailer onto a
barge in the dock and driven onto the ship. The Sunshine Express has some
interesting articles on this transfer.
