This is a good opportunity to tell all about a level crossing accident waiting to
happen. At Hexam on the main line to Maitland there is a private level crossing
across a 4 track main line that goes into Old Smithies. Old Smithy is a somewhat
eccentric character that delights in playing games with trains. So serious has the
situation become that all trains are now forced to slow to 20kph and blow their
horn whilst approaching the crossing. There is a private security guard and a safe
working officer manning the crossing 24hrs a day to protect the old fool. I guess
the SRA must be worried about him otherwise they wouldn't go to all this trouble
