This is getting away from what this Newsgroup is about, Railways remember.
But I'll put my 2 cents in (or should that be tuppence).

Well, No! Could you imagine trying to explain the Imperial System to
someone brought up on Metric one?
-16 ounces in a pound, 14 pounds in a stone (how many stones in a ton?).
-12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a foot, 500 odd yards in a mile.

It's so much easier when everything is based on mutliples of ten, Arguments
over abbreviations don't neccesarily mean that the system is bad.
