That sort of work would require a shutdown of the line or a major break 
between trains. In the first case there would be no trains running such as 
what's happening now on the South Coast line. If the work is of a minor 
nature 
then trains can still run but worksite protection would still need to be in 
place such as PW31 (Worksite protection officer)and PW11's (Flaggies and 
Lookouts). These people are in touch with with operations and tell you to 
leave the track when trains approaching. And from experience they can be a 
bit 
over-zealous such as ordering us from the track when a train is not due for 
about 10 minutes. Anyway for staff just walking through the tunnels ie 
signal 
electrician, there are warning lights which extinguish when a train 
approaches.
