I agree.  The cast bar frame of the R is much more accessable than the
plate steel frame of the J and most other Victorian classes of
locomotives (S and H are the other exceptions I think).

IIRC, the R class frame was completely designed with this in mind and
has spacer sections that can be removed and the frame bolted back
together in a narrower configuration for SG.

Having seen J 512 at Seymour a couple of weeks ago, I don't think that
this is a viable option.  SRHC have it in pieces, with just the frame
sitting on the ground to be GCed.

Of course, they may have disassembaled it for a safer restoration (for
the restorers that is).
