If you're interested in the Cooma line, then talk to the Cooma Monaro
Railway and/or ARHS(ACT) and suggest they run an organised guided walking
tour of the closed portions of the line. You may have to pay $15-20 to
take part, but as with all such walks they would provide historical notes
and point out items of interest along the way.
