Filming was done in mid/late 1999. 
If all this updating of the film was done, ie modern conflict China v Taiwan
and the nuclear sub, it's surprising that no-one realised that we wouldn't
run out of fuel as Bass strait supplies all our needs.

Still, that would have mucked up the story too much.
