The main reason is to reduce travelling time on this route(BRisbane-
Cairns) Most of QR Traveltrains are hopelessly slow, with competition
on North coast route intensify along with budget airline about to enter
this market. QR need something that will hold up its position in the
market. However diesel tilt train will not have any sleepers at all
that would be a bummer for passengers who wish to sleep <properly> at
night. Also journey time of 27 hours is really not a great improvement
compare with other modes....
