Re: Slide Scanners

I have a HP6200c general scanner with a crude single slide at a time mirror device and accompanying HP software. It also
applies to HP5200c (different software) and the successors HP6300 etc.

Last year I scanned many 40 year old slides of "Sydney Trams in the last few years". Most slides were "infected" with a
sort of crinkly - furry effect. Many were extremely faded and many had been underexposed when taken.

During and after scanning, using various packages I have been able to do lots of things with colour or obtrusive shadows
but not much with the "fungus like effect"

Until I was referred to Vuescan. I have just downloaded the shareware (test) version, rescanned my worst infected slide
and the difference is amazing.

It seems to be able to do a "micro" softening. The goo goes but the focus stays.

Costs: HP6200c was an approx $700 scanner (USB, SCSI extra - cable/card)
Vuescan $US40

You have a general scanner with a slide attachment.

I believe the future is in digital - I have just looked at pictures referred to in the binaries group taken with a
Nikon SLR D1. The focus, resolution etc is fantastic.
Also IBM have publicised a 1gig memory card at $US 999.

Unless you actually want to project slides from an old type slide projector, I think their days are numbered.
