I doubt very much whether a three hour or so trip to Brisbane would
have held any attraction. Imagine travelling all the way to Robina at
the speeds and conditions that apply in the Brisbane to Beenleigh
section! 

The reason the present line is viable is precisely because it is a new
construction on a new alignment designed for high speed, not a warmed
over country branch line.
