Re: [NSW, OT] Rail passes

If you were reading the newspapers in the last week or so, it was predicted
that the cost of the school transport subsidy scheme will reach almost half
a billion dollars within the next couple of years. This is the result of the
Greiner-Metherell madness which said that any child could attend any school
regardless of location, and receive free travel to get there. Every attempt
to rein it in since it was introduced over a decade ago has led to howls of
protest from those who benefit from it. Even a limited co-payment of $10 per
term proposed by the NSW Govt a couple of years ago failed due to the
screams of this interest group. I have had three children entitled to use
the scheme, and I'm quite willing to meet a co-payment, if it lessens the
demands on the Budget, and improves transport and education.
