Before the advent of the purpose built punt at the Spit for electric
trams, the Manly steam trams were transfered to Manly via the harbour
using tugs and lighters.

The initial Manly electric trams were taken across on the Spit
vehicular punt, using temporary track, having first been hauled over
the suburban rail system to St Leonards to get to the North Sydney
tram system side of the Spit.
