There was a double track balloon loop at Caufield which was used for
race trams.
There was also a double track triangle connection at the east end of the
loop.
On race days, trams used to be stabled near the Caulfield station ready
for homeward
crowds. When this happened, route 3 trams were routed "via the
straight".
Someone might know whether the route 3 ran via the straight in the early
days, or whether
it always ran via the loop.
