There was an article in Railway Digest back in 1992 written by Andrew Mclean
review full derail of running XPT on North Coast line and Main South line
compare with 81 class hauls Sydney/Melbourne Express and Brisbane Limited.

IIRC it turns out that it's cheaper to run Sydney/Melbourne Express and
Brisbane Limited then XPT, part of the reason was XPT power car is not as
fuel efficiency as 81 class loco. XPT sets are also fixed where as loco haul
sleepers can be very flexible depends on demand. Plus use of EL class can
get the train upto XPT speed with less cost then XPT.
