Why don't you try to charter your own train,from a rolling stock provider,ie
a DERM and trailer and head up there in the VR time honoured manner?
Would it not be possible to travel by normal service to Bendigo and Derm
from there?
To add a little spice come home via Echuca and drop the Derm at
Seymour,finish by regular service.
Sleeping arrangements could be as it used to be done seat or floor of Derm
and trailer.
Surely it could be done for less than $500
