Re: [TAS] Rare sight in Hobart

Lets get the facts straight here:

DC4588 has made a number of trips to Hobart, some in the
daylight and some under cover of darkness. Its appearance
in Hobart was not unusual. The trip noted here was in fact
the second occasion when this happened, the other was on
Saturday 18 December when a similar combination ran train
736 from Hobart.

The operation of the ZR locos in multiple with the GMs was
covered in Tasmanian Rail News 207. A minor modification to
the braking system on the ZRs allowed this operation to
become common and they have been noted running in various
combinations, e.g. ZR-DQ-ZR, ZR-QR-ZR, ZR-DC-QR-DQ, DQ-DC-
QR-ZR.

However note that the two ZR locos are not your typical EE
loco. They differ in two major points:

1. They have been rewired from the standard EE 100 volts to
the standard American 78 volts;

2. Their infinitely variable EE pneumatic controllers have
been replaced by notched controllers, so they behave more
like a standard American/Australian loco than a typical EE.
