The previous posts, debating how IU drivers' should pass defective signals,
are totally irrelevant to the Cowan tragedy. From memory, the only signal
showing an obvious irregularity was signal 33.4, which oscillated from green
to yellow, and was observed by passengers on the steam train.

The IU arrived at signal 34.6, which was at stop. When the signal cleared to
green, after a wait of about ten minutes, the train proceeded. From the IU
drivers' perspective, the system was functioning normally. This was
confirmed by a surviving passenger riding in the front cab of the IU

Fortunately the witness in the cab of the IU was able to testify the signal
was at initially at stop, and then subsequently changed to clear, otherwise
the enquiry probably would have stated the cause was "driver error".
