Sorry Brendan but someone has been having you on with these statistics.

The Booze-Allen-Hamilton report on rail safety in Australia which was
released in November last year provides comprehensive statistics on
transport accident deaths for the years 1988 to 1997.

In only one of those years (1988) were air related deaths less than rail
related.

For the year you quoted 1997 the figures are:

                deaths
Rail 39
Road 1876
Water 48
Air 49
Other 2

An interesting point to note is that the rail related deaths would be
predominately employees or contractors whilst in the other modes the deaths
would be largely passengers. Remove employees from the equation and in most
years you would find very few passenger deaths on rail in Australia.

Figures for the other years show a similar pattern.

No matter how you present the figures the result is always the same - rail
is the safest mass transport mode.
