It depends on how much money you can afford to spend.  The very
top of the line digital cameras compare reasonably well to 35mm
cameras, with interchangable lenses and all the bells & whistles,
but you'd be spending several thousand (camera plus lenses).

The $500-$900 range digital cameras are not at all equivalent to
an SLR, they are, as your friend said, intended for taking pictures
for web use.

Were I in your position, I'd be looking at the new Canon SLR line,
with the image stabilization lenses.
