Binary groups are dead in aus. Period. They exist in the US, but most
of them do not get bought into Australia as the bandwidth is to expensive.

A friend who works for a major ISP mentioned earlier in the week, that their
US partner doesn't feed them most of alt.* (pictures and binaries) as they
consider the waste of expensive bandwidth not worth it. He wasnt even aware of
this until he visited them in the US and get a shock when he logged onto
their main news server! (Presumably others in Australia knew about the
limited feed, its just no one told this friend until he was over the pond).

The bandwidth is by far the most expensive factor. Disks and servers to spool
the junk are way down the list.

The the US, bandwidth is virtually free, so there isnt so much concern about
binary groups as their is here.

You will not get an aus.binaries group through, local admins, worried about
the cost of bandwidth will block it. Even if the techos let it through, soon
the bean counters will be asking why they need to spend another million dollars
on bigger links.
And alt.binaries group will probably be blocked at the international gateways,
as that bandwidth is even MORE expensive.
