I would have though a main line diesel -say a 40,42,44 would be more expensive
than a smallish steam loco to run (like a 30). Fuel, spares (if new) and
electrics.
What is the spare parts situtation with thilmeres diesels and steamers (are they
relying on dimishing former SRA stock). Or do they buy new? I haven't noticed a
large warehouse of spares down there or do they store the stuff at some other
location?
