The $111 (not $155) is just for the concession card - for the privelige
of traveling on a concession ticket. This of course is outrageous and
the only reason for it is that "its always been that way", a common
excuse used by public transport authorities. THe history of it is that
tertiary students used to not be entitled to concession fares, a
government was elected promising to change that, and did - but brought
in a big fee for the privilege
This means that students who only use PT occasionally need to pay the
full fare because its not worth buying a card.
A Zone 1 Weekly here is about ten bucks, or you can get a monthly for
$37. This will get you to Melbourne or Latrobe uni - I'm not sure about
Monash, I think its in Zone 2.
