The guard would have known when his Gordon-bound train was switched from the
Up Suburban to the Up Local, then to the Up Illawarra Local, then to the Up
Illawarra (might have got those last two around the wrong way). He was
making announcements all the way in about it being a Gordon train, something
should have twigged when arriving at Platform 21 (from memory, there is no
crossover after leaving Central to enable it to get to the North Shore
lines).
