I always thought that the EE K series was originally designed for  submarine use
and was modified accordingly for railway use.

Tells point was for the last 55 years EMD have been producing only 2 stroke
engines.  It is only within the last 5-6 years that EMD have developed a 4 stroke
engine. OK.
