Re: QR - Withdrawal of 1502 Class

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Bruce and list,

The following was sent to me from a mate in Brisbane on December 15

>They are now on their way to Redbank, where they will join the other 7
stored units for assessment. Of these, the best 10 will be selected and
mothballed, the others 'to be stripped of usable equipment and disposed of
as soon as possible'. The 10 mentioned will be stored at Banyo and available
to return to service on 14 days notice. Personally I can't see this
happening, as by the time the next grain/sugar seasons come around, several
4000 class will be in service, which will result in further surplus locos.
So effectively, no 1502 class will run after the end of 1999.<

>Latest news I have is that the 5 Rocky units (1504,12,14,20,24) are already
down. Mackay units 1511,13 arrived Normanby Tuesday arvo. Gladstone 1506 to
leave asap. 1518 still at Coppabella. 1505,10,15,23,26 still running on the
grain roster ex Toowoomba but coming to an end in next couple of days. All
the others already withdrawn at Redbank (1503,07,09,16,17,25,27,28,29,30)
plus those already sold to Tazrail
(1502,08,21,22) should add up to 29 units. I don`t know where they have them
all parked at Redbank though because I could only see about 8 this morning.<

So another chapter of QR's loco history has closed. I also heard the 2100
class (2100-2123) will be the next lot withdrwn and stored - sometime in the
next 6 months presumably as the 4000`s come on line. They have no intentions
of overhauling or upgrading them and easier to
just store them. Apparently QR has "too many" locos at the moment. I can`t
follow this as two months ago, they couldn`t find enough!!

Cheerz
David
