I always read with interest the comments made about 82 class units. As
far as them sticking up on Wingello bank there has never been any official
reports passed on about this. There was a problem with sticking up due
to wheel spin but this was rectified some years ago with a software revision.
One point to remember here, an 81 class is rated at 3300hp whereas an 82
is only rated at 3000hp. Failure rates are something I monitor and the
MTBUS (Mean Time Between Unscheduled Shopping) figures for 82 class are
better than those for the 81 class however having said that the 81s are
far older and not so well maintained. Yes 8214 did fail on it's first journey
to Melbourne but it would have failed for the same reason no mater what
train it was on that night. I think it is fair to say that the 82s were
somewhat troublesome when first delivered however the many modifications
and revisions made to them have improved this. Finally the 2 failures due
to inaccurate fuel gauges are news to me. I'm not doubting it may have
happened, just never reported. You must wonder why Freightcorp would not
take advantage of contractual penalty clauses and claim cash if this was
indeed a genuine failure. If anything I would suspect that it could have
been a case of operator error. The 82s have a fuel capacity of 10,500 litres
compared to the 81s at around 6000 litres. Finally I have forgotten to
mention that 8219,46 and 47 are no more. They have been broken down for
spare parts in recent months.

They have stopped rostering the 82's as far as possible on the limestone
trains(2261+2260 excluded, lighter load) because in the rain they have a
tendency to stick up on Wingello bank. Also I'd like to put my money on the
81's making it to there destination. An 82 failed on the first through
Melbourne run of SM2 and there have been 2x 82 class failures in the last
couple of months, due to inaccurate fuel gauges and the loco running out of
fuel.
But having said that I will report on an 81 class failure in my regular "on
the south" report.
