RE: Origin of DA7, NTs

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Ben,

while in Alice Springs, I commented to a couple of the Ghan Preservation
people that it was a shame they hadn't obtained an NT for preservation:
they said theose locos were more trouble than they were worth,
constantly breaking down. I still reckon even just a static shell would
have been nice. They did, however, say that if and whenever the NJs
become available, they wouldn't mind having the whole six!

DA7 used 4813's frame, but I think 870's panels. I believe 870 had a
cracked or bent frame.

Hello

>From Rod Milne's 'Tuscan Terriers and Mallee Mustard Pots' book, I've
got a
question. I always thought loco DA7 was the rebuilt ex-NSWGR 4813, and
that
it was in the process of being rebuilt when AN was sold, so that it
became
the first (?) loco in the ASR scheme. In Rod's book, he asserts that
DA7
was rebuilt from 870. 870 seems to have left Pt Lincoln about the time
that
DA7 was being rebuilt, so I guess DA7 could be the rebuilt 870, or even
a
combination of 4813 and 870. Any comments ?
