Origin of DA7, NTs

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Hello

>From Rod Milne's 'Tuscan Terriers and Mallee Mustard Pots' book, I've got a
question. I always thought loco DA7 was the rebuilt ex-NSWGR 4813, and that
it was in the process of being rebuilt when AN was sold, so that it became
the first (?) loco in the ASR scheme. In Rod's book, he asserts that DA7
was rebuilt from 870. 870 seems to have left Pt Lincoln about the time that
DA7 was being rebuilt, so I guess DA7 could be the rebuilt 870, or even a
combination of 4813 and 870. Any comments ?

The book also states that the Pt Lincoln 830s lost ground for a brief period
to the NJs and 'before they were accidentally torched . . . a couple of
delightful ex-CR NT class locos.' While it is true that NT 69 and 73 were
accidentally torched, they were actually in the process of being cut up at
the time (Rail Australia No.18, Sept 1990), having already been made
redundant by the arrival of further 830s, 842 in 1987, and 865 ex-Tasmania
in 1988. NT74 also worked Pt Lincoln, being cut up a year earlier, still in
CR desert red and silver.

BTW, this does not take away from what is a fantastic little book.Rod has to
be one of the most informative writers around, with his wonderful histories
of branch lines around the country in the ARHS Bulletins.

Cheers

Ben
