Re: Inaugural IP locos

4601, 4602, 4603 & 4604 being bufferless on the No 1 end.

I remember that in late 1973, my then next door neighbour, Charley Morris
(Delec driver) took me (10 years old) on a Glenlee Coalie run. We started
out at Delec and were driven to Rozelle to relieve the crew on 4601 + 4602
empty coalie to Glenlee. Very interesting trip to Glenlee, heightened by
seeing 3801 on an up pass held at the stick whilst we went onto the Glenlee
Branch. Another highlight was crossing two up coalies and being shown how
to switch the marker lights on alternate sides as a form of waving to each
one, and having it answered as well as being shown how to drive a 46 Class,
special instructions like "use no1 notch for a few seconds before going
through the other notches so that you don't make tha guard fall off/break
the couplings on the guards van" etc.

At Glenlee, we must have loaded our train, and waited for the next one in,
hauled by 4603 + 4604. Before departure, we had lunch in what must have
been a crib room, and talked to the crew off '03 + '04 who said in answer to
my eager questions that 3801 went past them at a fast speed. The two crews
took me out to the two sets of 46 Class and explained that these four were
special: the buffers were removed from the No 1 ends, and both pairs were
coupled No 1 ends together. Charley Morris said at the time that the
buffers were removed for Indian Pacific working so that they wouldn't buffer
lock with the Stainless Steel Cars.

I posted this memory because it seems unusual that on the inaugural IP +
extra that both pairs of units would be coupled No 1 ends together.
