The official original colour scheme was described as "light admirility grey"
which had a touch of blueness about it. This is described in Peter Clark's
1973 book and an AMRM magazine circa 1970.
But the second series of paint jobs in about 1973/4 were a definite light blue.
I can't recall seeing an oscillating headlight, although I suppose that the
WAGR may have made L251 an experimental loco being the first in its class.
It would have been better for them to do it SP style with 'Mars' light on
the roof and a headlight on the nose.
Whilst we are on the subject where were the WAGR locos exchanged with CR
locos prior to 1977 for the IP & Trans at Kalgoorlie? I think it may have
been Parkeston.
Just a correction to my fuel capacity for the L class, from the Westrail WTT
of 1978 it shows it has a capacity of 13,100 litres. Which in my estimates
would have given it a range for a passenger train of 3000km, and a freight
range of 1940km, these figures are based on the consumption for a VR C class
which was for a 10128litre tank was 2400 for a passenger, and 1500km for a
freight train. Regardless it still has a fuel tank larger than any existing
Government/ex-Government locomotive.
I know some other loco enthusiasts wish that the WAGR would have adopted a
version of the SD45 rather than the SD40.
HAPPY "L" HUNTING
regards, Grahame.
