I believe that the STA had their 3000? class suburban cars delivered from
Melbourne - Adelaide in the 1980s. I am not aware of their performance or
whether they did the trip in one day.
A day service was tried in the late 1980s using several sitters, a club car
and PCO van attached to the down morning Dimboola pass during the summer
months and it worked very well. I believe that a 930 was attached at
Dimboola (or did they work right through on the pass double heading with a
V/Line loco?)
When GSR assumed control of the OL they did state that a day train was being
considered (and since the previous Victorian govt withdrew the Dimboola pass
it would make sense).
