The westbound train was combined with the morning Horsham train and double
headed. A single Vic loco thence to the border for an engine change. The return
train changed locos at Serviceton and ran through to Melbourne by itself, the
Horsham train having already departed well in front of it. Interesting to note
that at that time, the VR had excellent refreshment services available from the
BRN and passengers in the know bought their lunch prior to Horsham from the BRN.
The RBJs were only serving light refreshments between Melbourne and Adelaide
whilst the BRN served hot meals.
