From my understanding, the 40 class could only MU within their own class members and not with any other class (although I also understand that a special series of tests were conducted with a 40 class and a 43 class in MU using a specially made-up MU connection cable).  The 43 class could MU (and certainly did) with the majority of other NSWGR locos.
 
By the way Roger,  could you advise which way the 43+49 combo were facing.  Were they back-to-back or elephant style?

Roger,
          would the 43 have been MU compatible with the 49 or did it have a second crew? I seem to recall that the 40 and 43s had manual transition and were not able to be MUed with other classes unless they had another crew in the second unit.

books as I also recall seeing 4912 on the Short North around this period.

On Friday 9 May 1969 I travelled to Fassifern on 19 North Paper Train behind
3813. An interesting sequence of Down trains followed in the pre-dawn
hours:- 3654 + 6009 on 413 Express Goods, 4305 on 661 Goods and 4304 + 4912
on 635 Goods.

This was 4912's load trial after overhaul at Cardiff Workshops and one of
the few occasions a 49 and 43 would have worked together.
