              would the 43 have been MU compatible with the 49 or did it
have a second crew? I seem to recall that the 40 and 43s had manual
transition and were not able to be MUed with other classes unless they had
another crew in the second unit.

    They were in multiple. AFAIK there have never been any restrictions on
the 43s multipling with other classes except the 40 class which were only
incompatible because they had 21 pin instead of 27 pin mu receptacles. There
are of course pictures of 40s and 43s on the same train being worked by two
crews. Certainly load tables for 43s doubling with other Alco classes were
issued in the mid 1960s WTTs.

    I have personally seen or seen photographs of 43s doubling with
42,421,422,43,44,442,45,47,48,830 and 49 class in NSW.

    Just to add to the original post I omitted to mention that 4306 was also
seen that morning on No12 Glen Innes Mail!
