Sydney, which once had Australia's largest tram system, lost it
completely.
But in August/September 1997, a
new light rail service, from Central Station to Ultimo and
Darling Harbour, has commenced operations. It is
operated by low floor
articulated trams based on the ASEA-Brown Boveri Variotram design.
For more information, have a look at the good collection of
Sydney
Light Rail pictures, by Matthew Geier.
There are also plans to extend this new service into the city proper,
with tracks along Pitt and/or Castlereigh Streets. Sydney will then truly
rejoin the world's civilised cities!
