So how would you propose running the services? two half-trains between
Darwin-Adelaide and Perth-Adelaide, with one half being double deck and the
other half being single deck? Then dividing the train at Adelaide?

Would be operationally inconvenient. Then there is the little matter of
having multiple designs of carriages. At least if they were all single deck
carriages, they would really only need a few types, without having to
duplicate accommodation types between single and double decked fleets.
