further (there was no patronage so the remaining section has been converted
to standard gauge.)
There are two tunnels, One long one then a short one (going to Belair)
Any others from Adelaide please supply info, particularly Approx. how many
"older style" diesel cars are in service (the ones where the driver sits in
the roof)
Regards, Mick, Sydney.
The long tunnel is the Sleeps Hill tunnel, two track, one SG, one
BG. The shorter tunnel is two portals side by side, it's little more
than a long underbridge at Shepherds Hill Road. Since the conversion
of one line to SG in 95 both have run as two parallel single lines, not
the double track it once was. There were also a number of stations
closed (Clapham, Millswood, Hawthorn) to enable running to the suburban
timetable on a single track.
As for the older cars with the driver in the elevated compartment I have never seen them on the Belair line. We always get the newer cars with the driver in the front compartment.
The trains have only run as far as Belair for quite some time, even predating the change to SG.
