That high pitched noise can also be heard in T/G and V sets when they accelerate

They would be GTO thyristors (no, not a Pontiac, it means Gate Turn Off).
Originally thyristors could not be turned off once power was applied to
them. GTOs have a control input so they can be turned on and off, this is
the gate.
