Early in this century in the UK. Bradford (4' gauge) and Leeds
(standard gauge) operated a through service with special trams with
sliding wheelsets of splined axles that could run on both gauges.
Even at the relatively low speeds of urban tramways technical problems
were severe and after a relatively short life the through service was
discontinued and passengers had to change cars at the corporation
boundary.
