I am in the same boat as you (or should that be train?)

I am currently with xoom.com (host) and webalias.com (URL redirection), both
services are free but produce ads. I did a search the other night on "free
web pages" and found a comparision guide (which isn't in my history anymore)
:(

This list featured a list of servers with and without ads, size limits etc
etc etc and opinions from users. I wish I can find it again!

After research, I found that the best for my needs (similar to yours maybe)
is Crosswinds (www.crosswinds.net) so I signed up. I haven't transferred to
the new server yet. When I get a domain name (in progress - tip, you can get
a au.com name cheaper than a com.au name and you don't have to be a
business) and the ad free server, I won't have ads.

On a related matter, I found one of these "see how fast your website is"
sites (see www.webpagesthatsuck.com - thanks Yuri for the link), most of the
speed lost appears to be because of the ads.
