: Platform 1 was used during the grade seperation stageworks.

: Box Hill used to be a 3 Platform Station, with Goods yard on the South side.
: First stage of the grade seperation was to abolish the Yard, and 3rd platform,
: and all points at the down end. The 3rd track from Camberwell then finished
: (Crossover & 1 turnout) at the Up end of the Station. The new Platform 1 (Up
: Trains only) was excavated, built, and slewed in. The next stage was Platform 2
: (for Down Trains). Once this had been completed, the old surface level station
: was removed, and the excaation completed. Eventually the station you see today
: was the result.

I posted the dates for the Box Hill grade seperation in another post a while
ago (like 2 weeks) I think it was unopened platforms.

Platform 1 at Box Hill was used for over 13 months. The low platform 4 is
directly under the old platform 3, low platform 3 under the old no.2, low
platform 2 under old no.1 and the new no.1 under the old goods yard. It
is one of the better grade seperations in Melbourne where in the end the
railway and road stayed in the oroginal alignment. (Not sure about Canterbury)
but places like Boronia, Oakleigh, Huntingdale, Sunshine, Broadmeadows etc
either the railway moved (Boronia) or the road was moved. Just look the
the Melway along the Dandenong Line and all the roads have a bend to go over
the railway line. (They could have moved the level crossing first, made
a temp. one and built the road bridge so the road stayed straight).
Frankston is another (road moved).

I think the next grade seperation in Melbourne will be Westall Road (at
Westall). Road over a bridge like Oakleigh, Broadmeadows, Frankston,
Huntingdale, Sunshine, Newport, etc...

: Keeps people on their toes. |-)

: > Incidentally, where does the exit ramp from platform 1 go?

: Up?... Sorry, I dunno.

Mirror of platform 4. There used to be just a gate, but when Macdonalds was
built it became a door. Before that there was nothing stopping you walk
down there.
